The influence of bond length dimerization due to Peierls distortions on totally symmetric vibrations of armchair carbon nanotubes is considered theoretically. It is shown that the radial and tangential motions for quinoid type dimerization are mixed and the radial breathing mode for Kekule type dimerization is splitted. � 2010 Elsevier B.V.
